Bedtime Breath Holds

A simple bedtime breathing activity using a deep inhale, brief hold and slow exhale.

 

HOW LONG

3–5 times.
Hold the breath for 5–10 seconds, then slowly exhale.

MAKE IT PLAYFUL

Imagine slowly blowing out a row of birthday candles after the breath hold.

WHEN TO STOP

Stop if your child becomes dizzy, breathless, uncomfortable or distressed.

What to Notice

  • Comfort:
    Does your child remain comfortable during the activity?
  • Counting:
    Can they quietly count during the breath hold?
  • Exhale:
    Can they slowly breathe out after the hold?
  • Response:
    Does your child remain comfortable throughout?

What to Practise 

  • Breathing sequence:
    Practise a deep inhale, short breath hold and slow exhale.
  • Quiet counting:
    Use quiet counting during the breath hold.
  • Slow exhale:
    Practise slowly breathing out after the hold.
